Tools and materials required to complete this course

Note: Tools and materials will be discussed at length in the course videos, but this list will give you an idea of the basics you will require.

  • A sewing machine with its standard accessories.
  • A freehand embroidery foot or darning foot for your sewing machine. See the images below for a few examples of what these feet commonly look like. If you are unsure about the foot required for your make and model of machine visit your friendly local sewing store that stocks your brand of machine, they will be able to help you out.
  • Spare sewing machine needles (sharp or jeans needles recommended, size 80-90 if using machine embroidery thread).
  • Bobbins suited to your machine.
  • A thread stand (if you like to work with one or if you are using large cones of thread).
  • A small machine embroidery hoop*. 15 – 25cm, (6 - 10inches) diameter is good. I prefer the sturdy wooden machine embroidery hoops but any hoop with a nice strong hold will be fine.
  • Water-soluble fabric* I recommend the water-soluble fabric that is white in colour and looks like interfacing rather than the clear film varieties. More details about this fabric will be provided in future lessons. See the downloadable spreadsheet below for a list of water-soluble fabric supplier suggestions from past students.
  • At least 2 squares of fabric to fit your embroidery hoop. Plain-woven cotton fabric is recommended eg. Calico, lawn, quilting fabric.
  • Good quality sewing /embroidery threads* of your choice (I use polyester machine embroidery thread, but feel free to use cotton/wool/metallic threads if you like to work with those).
  • Embroidery scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pens to draw on water-soluble fabric*
  • Access to hot water
  • Bucket or bowl to dissolve your embroideries in
  • Roll of paper towel
  • Baking paper
  • Aluminum foil
  • Long fine pins* (stainless steel if possible)
  • Moulds to shape embroideries around* (these could be styrofoam shapes, interesting shaped objects/bowls, etc.)
  • Sketchbook + pencils

*items marked with an asterisk are included in Meredith's Sculptural Embroidery Starter Stitch Kit which is available for purchase here.
